Operating in challenging environments

The NGO

“I want to safeguard my employees in the complex and dangerous locations in which our work is most needed”

It’s never easy creating security on missions where the humanitarian imperative is response to insecurity, but it’s a critical element of helping the most vulnerable. How can you navigate what could quite literally be mine elds, whilst measuring up to donor expectations, all the while protecting staff, bene ciaries and the communities in which they work?

We provide workable strategic and eld-level advisory and assistance to NGOs working in some of the world’s most di cult locations without putting a straitjacket on operations and in a way that positively contributes to programme goals. We understand that the most robust security solutions are built on access, communication, information and sustainability.

We use these principles to assist a wide range of organisations – for-profit and non-profit – in working in dangerous or di cult environments. Our people have operational experience in over 40 countries worldwide, the majority of which would be considered di cult or high threat. We help companies operate safely by creating a granular, accurate picture of the environment in which you’re operating, creating a workable security system for sta , carrying out training and mentoring, managing community engagement and auditing the operations and standards of local security partners.

  • Our people have highly specialised skills which can be extremely effective in the midst of a crisis, and understand the rigours of decision making in the fast-paced, fluid environment which characterises a crisis.
Our consultants have previous experience organising and executing complex evacuation operations, particularly from austere and difficult environments.
‘Speaking the language of insurance’ can be critical in demonstrating the value of investing in security and resilience capacity, and this is something in which we have experience and do very well.
We ensure that we always have access to the most relevant linguistic skills for the task at hand, with a focus on Arabic, Spanish, Mandarin and Russian.
Our consultants and management have worked on projects assisting clients in some of the world’s most difficult places, and have on-the-ground experience in over 40 countries worldwide.
We try to balance operational backgrounds with academic ones where possible, which always provides us with a solid research base to investigate topics for clients in a more comprehensive and detailed way when required.
Taking recommendations from an initial report and turning these into a living, breathing system for our clients is an art form which our people seek to constantly perfect as part of their broad skillset. This skill is the bread and butter of most of our implementation and advisory programmes.
We can assist in deploying online–learning and bespoke training syllabuses in an organisation to ensure that appropriate skills are developed, as per an overarching strategy, in a correct and consistent way.
Our network of trusted local sources can provide us with detailed ground truth information from a wide range of locations, as well as a local perception pertaining to a varied spectrum of issues.
We have identified and worked with premier providers of risk management and crisis software, and have extensive experience in how these can be used to increase the resilient capacity of an organisation or country at all levels.
The decreasing cost of satellite and geospatial imagery means that we can use this type of information to assist consulting projects very effectively, particularly for understanding an area remotely or an asset to be protected.
We continuously analyse huge amounts of social media output, up to 50 billion online conversations, with our technology partner to gain real-time and historical intelligence which can complement other types of analysis.
